Parents everywhere know the struggle of wanting to be generous during the holidays without going broke. I mean, who hasn’t felt that pressure to make the season magical for their kids while silently panicking about the budget? This episode dives deep into that very dilemma, sparked by a listener's question that resonated with me. We explore how to balance the urge to give with the necessity to keep our finances in check. Generosity is a beautiful thing, but when it starts to feel like a burden, it’s time to take a step back and reassess. After sharing a heartfelt story about my own father and his generous spirit, I emphasize the importance of giving wisely and with intention. We’ll discuss practical tips like budgeting for generosity and exploring non-monetary ways to give back, from volunteering to simply spending quality time with loved ones. Let’s navigate this holiday season without the financial hangover, because trust me, nobody wants to start the New Year stressed about their bank account.
The holidays can be a tricky time for generosity, and that’s a vibe I totally get. It’s all about wanting to spread joy while keeping your own house in order. I shared a personal anecdote about my father-in-law, who went all out every December, gifting like he was Santa himself. While everyone loved him for it, he struggled financially because he prioritized generosity over his own stability. This episode is a reminder that true generosity should bless both you and the recipient. We unpack the idea that giving shouldn’t hurt your financial health. You can still make a significant impact without breaking the bank. From setting a giving budget to understanding that your time can be just as valuable as money, we cover it all. Remember, folks, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so let’s fill ours first before we share with others.
Wrapping it all up, we tackle the big question: how can you be generous without putting yourself in a tight spot? It’s all about intentionality and planning. We chat about creating a list of who you want to give to and what you can realistically afford to spend—whether that’s money, time, or talent. And let’s be honest, the holidays can be a whirlwind of emotions, and it’s easy to feel pressured to give more than you can. So, let’s keep those emotions in check and make smart choices. I want you to walk away from this episode feeling empowered to give with grace, not guilt. So, grab a pen, and let’s get that giving budget sorted out. Remember, the best gifts come from the heart, not just the wallet!
Takeaways:
- Generosity is awesome, but it shouldn't leave you broke or stressed out, ya know?
- Before you give, make a plan and budget so you don't end up in a pickle.
- Don't borrow cash to be generous; it just creates double trouble for you later.
- Your time and love can be as valuable as cash, so give those too!
- Keep it real during the holidays: give with grace, not guilt, to avoid financial strain.
- Plan your giving and stick to it, so you can spread joy without going into debt.

Today I want to talk about a common problem among so many parents.
Speaker AI got this listener question.
Speaker AThis really just hit home for me, said Ralph.
Speaker AI really want to help people during the holidays, but sometimes I end up giving more than I can afford.
Speaker AAnd here's the big question for today.
Speaker AHow can I be generous without putting myself in a bad spot?
Speaker AI thought when I got this message, man, I've been there.
Speaker AAnd maybe you're a parent, maybe just somebody likes to be generous.
Speaker AAbby's nodding her head right now.
Speaker AAbby's my producer.
Speaker AI mentioned her on the show.
Speaker ABut we all feel this at times, especially moms.
Speaker AI think moms really embrace this one.
Speaker AThey just want this holidays to be special.
Speaker AI can remember my own mother, she really wanted to be special for us kids.
Speaker AAnd I remember my mom would stretch that budget.
Speaker AI tell you what, it was like a rubber band was about ready to break.
Speaker AShe would take on extra work, she would overspend because she had this view.
Speaker AShe needed to make it magical.
Speaker ABut in the end, it just created pressure and it created a financial strain.
Speaker AAnd listen, when I'm being honest with myself, and maybe you're thinking the same thing too, it leads to stress, it leads to guilt.
Speaker AHey, it leads to tension at home.
Speaker AAnd listen, generosity is beautiful.
Speaker AIt's a wonderful thing.
Speaker AGod has given us the desire to be generous.
Speaker ABut if it becomes a burden and when it's driven by guilt instead of grace, we got a problem.
Speaker AThat's exactly what I'm going to talk about on today's show.
Speaker BThis is Financially Confident Christian, your daily dose of gospel, grounded insight and faith driven tips to help you break the cycle of financial shame with confidence.
Speaker AWelcome to the show.
Speaker AI'm Ralph.
Speaker AMy daily goal is to help you break that cycle of financial shame and do it with confidence.
Speaker AAnd we're continuing our series of enjoying the holidays, finding joy without going broke.
Speaker AAnd I think about as I was preparing for today's show, I've seen so many friends and family members struggle with this tension.
Speaker AIt's that constant tension between compassion and.
Speaker AAnd financial responsibility.
Speaker AHey, it's like we got to be adults now, right?
Speaker AAnd I've had to learn that lesson myself.
Speaker AAnd here's the thing I want you to just paint right now.
Speaker AYou can't help others by hurting your own household.
Speaker AI want to say that again because it's so critical that we understand it.
Speaker AYou will never help others by hurting yourself.
Speaker AI'm going to tell you a story about my father.
Speaker ANow.
Speaker AHe since passed away.
Speaker AI mentioned his soup the other Day if you missed that show.
Speaker AWe talked about seafood soup.
Speaker ABut my father in law, man, he thought he was Santa Claus, Papa, Noel, whatever you call it in your culture.
Speaker AAnd here's what he would do Every year he would bank all of his holiday, his sick time.
Speaker AAll year long he worked at a law firm.
Speaker AAnd what they did is that in December they would give you whatever you hadn't used for sick time or vacation time or whatever those things are.
Speaker AAnd he would bank that up so he would get this huge bonus about the beginning of December.
Speaker AWell, that's what he wanted to do.
Speaker AI get it.
Speaker AI embraced it.
Speaker AHe was a generous guy and he would just give away like Santa Claus.
Speaker AI mean, he had barrels of stuff.
Speaker AI'm talking about everybody got a gift.
Speaker ABut the problem is, when I look back at it now with clarity, he ended up hosting himself so much.
Speaker AHe didn't have any savings.
Speaker AHe wasn't really doing a good job with his retirement preparation.
Speaker AAnd unfortunately his house was just falling apart.
Speaker AHe had all this money going into gifts and people loved him.
Speaker AHe was Santa Claus.
Speaker ABut he wasn't taking care of himself.
Speaker AWhich leads me to this quote from Dave Ramsey.
Speaker AAnd Dave Ramsey said this.
Speaker AHe said, you can't pour from an empty cup.
Speaker AGet your own house in order so you can give freely.
Speaker AAnd I think that is some very wise and sage advice.
Speaker ASo let's answer today's question.
Speaker AHow can I be generous without putting myself in a bad spot?
Speaker AI really want to park here for a couple minutes because there are ways to do this in a wise way.
Speaker AFirst thing I'm going to encourage you to do is give from wisdom.
Speaker AYou have to understand it.
Speaker ASee, true generosity blesses both you and the person you're giving it to.
Speaker AIf it's just costing you money, guess what?
Speaker AI don't know that that's true generosity.
Speaker AAnd when it hurts your stability, like my father in law, it was hurting his stability.
Speaker AWhen it hurts your stability, that's when it stops being wise because then you're putting yourself in jeopardy.
Speaker ASo start there.
Speaker ASecond thing I'm going to encourage you to do is pray about it.
Speaker AWe talk a lot on this show about prayer because I think prayer is super powerful.
Speaker ABut ask God, reach out to them and say, hey God, listen, how can I have the most lasting impact?
Speaker ABecause it's not always money.
Speaker AA lot of people get stuck on that.
Speaker AWell, I got to spend this much on this person.
Speaker AI got to spend this.
Speaker AAnd we've talked about that on the show.
Speaker AWe've talked about doing that list, we talked about putting the number next to them.
Speaker ABut I'm going to tell you something right now.
Speaker AYou can give your time, you can give your skills.
Speaker AHey, creativity, all those things are just as valuable as money.
Speaker AWhich leads me to this.
Speaker AYour time and your presence.
Speaker AThat's presence with a CE count.
Speaker AAlso, it can be something as simple as a visit.
Speaker AGo see your parents, go see your grandparents.
Speaker AGo see that aunt or uncle that you haven't seen for a while.
Speaker AMaybe you don't have the money to do that.
Speaker APick up the phone and call them.
Speaker ACalling is cheap now.
Speaker AWe don't pay for long distance anymore.
Speaker AJust pick up the phone.
Speaker AMaybe for you it's volunteering.
Speaker ASome of the most impactful stories I've ever heard about people is when they gave back to others, when they volunteered with somebody.
Speaker AThose things all mean so much more than money.
Speaker AYou want to find joy in the holiday season?
Speaker ADo some of those things.
Speaker AAnd here's a little pro tip.
Speaker AAnd I'm going to warn you on this one.
Speaker AAvoid funding charity with debt.
Speaker AI've had some people say to me, ralph, you know, I really want to give to this charity, but I don't have the cash right now.
Speaker AShould I go get a credit card advance or should I do something like this?
Speaker AHere's the deal.
Speaker ABorrowing to give is what creates what I call double bondage.
Speaker AIt's just the truth.
Speaker AYou're bonding yourself spiritually and financially.
Speaker ASo here, big takeaway for today.
Speaker ADon't ever borrow to give.
Speaker AThat's a bad plan.
Speaker AGive your time, give your talents, give your creativity.
Speaker ABut you don't have the money to do it.
Speaker ADon't do it.
Speaker AAnd finally, big takeaway for today.
Speaker AGot a lot of big takeaways today.
Speaker APlan your giving if you're going to give.
Speaker AAnd listen.
Speaker AAnd I'm going to get to our Bible verse here in a second.
Speaker ABut limit that plan early.
Speaker ABudget that generosity.
Speaker AWe talked about creating that list of people that you want to give to.
Speaker AWell, you can do the same thing for your donations.
Speaker AA lot of people feel that pull at Christmas time.
Speaker AYou know, you see the commercials on tv.
Speaker AMy family feels the same way.
Speaker ACreate that list.
Speaker APut a number next to each of them.
Speaker AWhich leads me to our Bible verse today.
Speaker AAnd this one comes to us from Second Corinthians, chapter 9, verse 7.
Speaker AIt says, each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion.
Speaker AFor God loves a cheerful giver.
Speaker AAnd I just love this verse.
Speaker AThat means you're intentionally thinking about it's.
Speaker ANot something.
Speaker AJust gut instinct, right?
Speaker AWe're not talking about that.
Speaker ABut it also tells us, not reluctantly or under compulsion, because why God loves a cheerful giver.
Speaker AAnd in my view, cheerfulness is being intentional, not guilt.
Speaker AWhy about we pray together right now, Lord.
Speaker AWe come to you right now.
Speaker AAnd we want to be those cheerful givers that you want us to be, Lord.
Speaker ASo give me wisdom, Lord, to not act impulsively during this season.
Speaker AAnd, Lord, show me where my generosity can do the most good.
Speaker AShow me your way, Lord, and your will for my life.
Speaker ATeach me that my time and my love and my talents and my creativity are just as valuable as money, Lord.
Speaker AAnd they're so much more impactful, Lord.
Speaker AAnd just we ask all of these things in the name of Jesus.
Speaker AAmen.
Speaker AAll right, well, here's your action item for today.
Speaker AI want you to make a decision today before you do anything else today.
Speaker AMake a decision.
Speaker APut together a giving budget or list.
Speaker APut it on paper, pen to paper.
Speaker AI think that is so impactful when you write it down.
Speaker AAnd once you write it down, take a step back and pray over it before the emotions of the season take over, really pray about it and ask the Lord to show you what he would want you to do.
Speaker AKeep those emotions in check.
Speaker ABecause, listen, these marketing people, they're very good at this.
Speaker AAll kinds of great commercials that tear at your heartstrings, don't they?
Speaker ABut keep your emotions in check and be intentional and celebrate that joy.
Speaker ANow you might be having the thought of.
Speaker AI got a question, Ralph.
Speaker AHow do I give you a question to the show?
Speaker AYou do a lot of questions on this show.
Speaker AWell, I made it really super simple.
Speaker AIf you've got a question for this show, all you've got to do is go to justaskralph.com when you get to that website, just put your question in there.
Speaker AAnd guess what?
Speaker AI'll feature your question on the show because a lot of people can be impacted by your questions.
Speaker ASo don't feel like you can't participate.
Speaker AI love participation.
Speaker AGo to just ask Ralph.com and send me your question today.
Speaker AAnd as I close today, remember this generosity is good.
Speaker AListen, I'll say generosity is a beautiful thing.
Speaker AIt's something that God wants us to be.
Speaker AI really believe that people were born to be generous.
Speaker ABut it's not good if it leaves you broke.
Speaker ASo give with grace, don't give with guilt.
Speaker AProtect your home first.
Speaker ALike Dave Ramsey said, you got to be protecting yourself first and then help others.
Speaker AI want to thank you for listening to me today.
Speaker AGo out there and be the financially confident Christian that I know you can be.
Speaker AYou've got the skills to do it.
Speaker AHave confidence in yourself because I sure have confidence in you.
Speaker ABut bigger than that, the Lord has confidence in you.
Speaker AStay financially savvy today.
Speaker AGod bless you, and you have a great day today.
