Hey, I've got a great question to start today's show.
Speaker ARalph, we love traveling to see family and hosting guests at our home, but the costs always get out of control.
Speaker AAnd here's their question.
Speaker AHow can we do both without draining our savings?
Speaker AAnd listen to me, travel and hosting can fill your calendar or it can empty your wallet.
Speaker AIt's just a true statement, isn't it?
Speaker AThe question is, what's the real cost of your holiday joy?
Speaker AThat's the question I'm going to answer on today's show.
Speaker BThis is Financially Confident Christian, your daily dose of gospel, grounded insight and faith driven tips to help you break the cycle of financial shame with confidence.
Speaker AWelcome to the show.
Speaker AI'm Ralph and I come to you every day with the goal of helping you break that cycle of financial shame with confidence.
Speaker AAnd today we're going to talk about the cost of holiday entertaining and travel.
Speaker AAnd I want to tell you about some family friends of mine that they're named the Smiths.
Speaker ANow, the Smiths were these folks, their family lived far away from them and every year they loved to travel for the holidays to see their family.
Speaker AThat's what made the holidays what they are.
Speaker ABut one year, Mr. Smith had lost his job and he was really having a hard time making bills, he was having a hard time planning.
Speaker AAnd he looked and the cost of flights had gone up substantially.
Speaker AI don't remember what was going on.
Speaker AI think there might have been a gas crisis or something.
Speaker ABut the cost of plates was outrageous.
Speaker AAnd him and his wife decided.
Speaker AIt was a tough decision, but they decided they were going to skip that family visit one year all because of the costs.
Speaker AAnd I forget, they told me afterwards we ended up having them come over to our house on Christmas.
Speaker AAnd I could tell they were a little down that day.
Speaker AAnd I said, what's going on?
Speaker AI said, you guys are usually happy.
Speaker AYou're kind of the life of the party.
Speaker AThey said, we just feel lost, Ralph.
Speaker AEvery year we look forward to traveling to see our family.
Speaker AAnd I get it.
Speaker AThey felt left out.
Speaker AThey didn't ask me for some guidance.
Speaker ABut I said, hey, can I help you with this situation?
Speaker AI got an idea for you.
Speaker ANext year, why don't you plan ahead?
Speaker AAnd that's exactly what they did.
Speaker AThey planned ahead next year they booked early.
Speaker AAnd here's the other thing they did.
Speaker AThey imposed on relatives.
Speaker AA lot of people say, well, I couldn't do that, Ralph, it's okay, your relatives are cool with you staying with them.
Speaker AAnd when they did that, because they planned Ahead.
Speaker AThey booked those tickets early.
Speaker AThey didn't wait till the last minute.
Speaker AMr. Smith was great about waiting till the last minute.
Speaker AThey booked ahead, they saved hundreds of dollars.
Speaker AAnd I'll never forget after that holiday, they said something.
Speaker AThey said that was the most peaceful visit they'd ever had.
Speaker AThey planned ahead, they saved money, and they got to live what their dream was.
Speaker AThat's what they loved about Christmas.
Speaker AAnd we found this anonymous quote, and I think this one just absolutely nails it.
Speaker AIt's kind of funny, but I think it's perfect.
Speaker AIt says, hospitality is making others feel at home, even when you wish they were.
Speaker ASee, that's the funny thing, isn't it?
Speaker AYou wish they were at home.
Speaker ABut let's get back to our question today.
Speaker AHow can we do both things?
Speaker AHow can we do both of those things without draining our savings?
Speaker ASo today I want to share some ways to entertain and travel without draining your budget.
Speaker ALike I told dismissed.
Speaker AFirst thing, travel smart.
Speaker AThat's the big thing for today.
Speaker ABook early.
Speaker AIf you don't know this, airlines increase the price of tickets the closer you get to the date.
Speaker ASo if you can book those tickets early, you can save hundreds of dollars.
Speaker AYou get the seat you want, and guess what?
Speaker AYou're going to save money.
Speaker ANow, maybe the folks aren't so far away that you could consider driving.
Speaker AI actually love to drive.
Speaker AMy wife hates driving.
Speaker AIf I say to her, we're going to drive somewhere, she's like, I'm not going.
Speaker AIf it's a couple hours, she can tolerate it.
Speaker ABut more than that, not so much now.
Speaker AMy oldest now lives in Texas and for us, that's like a 30 hour drive.
Speaker AI don't think we're going to be driving there anytime soon.
Speaker ABut if you've got folks that are close to you or family members that are close to you, consider driving.
Speaker AIt might save you some money.
Speaker ASecond thing I want to talk about today, hospitality.
Speaker AA lot of people get hung up on this.
Speaker AMaybe you're not traveling, but maybe you're going to entertain people in your home.
Speaker AHospitality is about the heart.
Speaker ASo many people get stressed out about this.
Speaker AThey got to show off.
Speaker AThey got to put on a show for everybody.
Speaker AI know people in my own family that do that.
Speaker AThat's not what people are looking for.
Speaker AKeep it clean, keep it simple.
Speaker ABecause here's the truth.
Speaker AYour guests remember warmth.
Speaker AThey remember that warmth.
Speaker AThey remember that welcoming attitude that's gonna far outlast those expensive things.
Speaker AI know so many people think, well, I gotta get the house in order.
Speaker AI Gotta redecorate the guest room.
Speaker AI gotta do this.
Speaker AI gotta.
Speaker AThey drive themselves crazy.
Speaker AThey're trying to put on this show, this performance.
Speaker AIt's not how they live their life.
Speaker AIt's funny.
Speaker AI did that one time in my own house.
Speaker AMy wife said, is the queen coming to visit?
Speaker ARalph, who's coming to visit?
Speaker AMy mom was coming over.
Speaker AWe just got this new house, and I was trying to put on a performance, if you will.
Speaker AAnd what's funny, because during the dinner, I said to my mom, I said, don't you love?
Speaker AShe goes, ralph, I could care less what your house looks like.
Speaker AIt's about family.
Speaker AUnderstand that.
Speaker AFocus on the people.
Speaker AIt's so easy for us to miss that connection when we're chasing perfection.
Speaker AWe're looking for peace.
Speaker ALet's look for that peace over performance.
Speaker ALet joy, not comparison, lead your gathering.
Speaker AWhich leads us to our Bible verse.
Speaker AWe actually got two Bible verses that I couldn't decide which one I like.
Speaker ASo guess what?
Speaker AYou're getting both.
Speaker AFirst one is this.
Speaker AFirst Peter, chapter four, verse nine.
Speaker AOffer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Speaker ANow, listen, I'm a park on this one for a second because I'm guilty of this one, too.
Speaker AIf you're going to ask people to come to your home, whether it's for the holidays or anything else, be hospitable.
Speaker ADon't grumble about it.
Speaker ADon't complain about it.
Speaker AIf you don't want them to come to your house, don't invite them.
Speaker AIt sounds kind of harsh, but connect with them.
Speaker AIt's not about a performance.
Speaker AOffer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
Speaker AThat's right, from the scripture.
Speaker AIf you're going to grumble about it, it's kind of like giving.
Speaker AGod wants you to be a cheerful giver.
Speaker AWell, he wants you to be a cheerful hospitality person.
Speaker AIf that's not who you are, then don't do it.
Speaker AGo to their house.
Speaker AGo impose on them.
Speaker ASecond verse for today.
Speaker AHebrews, chapter 13, verse 2.
Speaker ADo not forget to show hospitality to strangers.
Speaker AFor by doing so, some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
Speaker AI read that and I said, well, think about that for a second.
Speaker ALittle tangent here for a second.
Speaker AI think it's a great tangent to take during the holidays.
Speaker ADo you ever feel like we're surrounded by angels?
Speaker ASometimes you just wonder, is that person an angel?
Speaker AI felt that in my own life at times.
Speaker ABut what's the Scripture telling us?
Speaker AShow hospitality to those people.
Speaker AOne of the most beautiful things that my family has done during the holidays, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas, we invite other people that we don't even know.
Speaker ASometimes maybe somebody from church.
Speaker AWe see they're always by themselves or somebody that we know has been through a tough time.
Speaker AI remember a couple years ago, there was one guy, he had just broken up with his girlfriend and my son said, hey dad, can we invite such and such to our house?
Speaker AI'm like, absolutely.
Speaker ABecause then you're fulfilling the law of Christ.
Speaker AWhat's it saying?
Speaker AShow hospitality to strangers.
Speaker AYou're showing them your Christian faith, you're showing them Christian knowledge.
Speaker ASee, that's what it's all about.
Speaker ADon't forget to do that.
Speaker ALet's pray together.
Speaker AFather, we come to you right now and we just ask for safe travels and loving gatherings during the holidays.
Speaker ALord, we're so grateful that you give us the opportunity to do that.
Speaker AAnd as we're planning those things and we're being intentional stewards of that, give us wisdom to plan with simplicity and to plan with joy and not worrying about trying to impress so many people and put on the perfect show, Lord, help us to see that as a connection.
Speaker AHelp us to see that as reaching out and connecting with people.
Speaker AGive us a heart to serve, Lord, without comparison or without pride, Lord.
Speaker AAnd we ask this in the name of Jesus.
Speaker AAmen.
Speaker AAll right, you ready for your one action item today?
Speaker AIf you're traveling, I've got two action items for today because it depends if you're traveling or if you're staying at home.
Speaker AIf you're traveling, set that travel budget early.
Speaker ADo it ahead of time.
Speaker ABook those tickets, plan ahead.
Speaker AComparison shop.
Speaker AThere's a bunch of websites to comparison with flights.
Speaker AMaybe you can get a not a direct flight.
Speaker AMaybe you can fly a different time of the day or a different week of the day.
Speaker AI tell you, I'm not a big flyer, but when I fly, I go out there, compare set that.
Speaker AMaybe you drive, maybe you make a different kind of vacation out of it.
Speaker ANow, if you're hosting, I'm going to encourage you to do one more thing.
Speaker AIf you're hosting, look for two or three low cost hospitality touches.
Speaker ARemember, it's not about putting on a show.
Speaker AYou don't have to put on it like the Queen Mother herself is visiting.
Speaker AShow hospitality, show love, but plan early.
Speaker AAsk yourself this question.
Speaker AHow can I make my guests feel truly welcome?
Speaker AMaybe that guest is an angel.
Speaker AI'll tell you what, my family, they're not angels.
Speaker ALet's just say that the scripture is holding true and also encourage you to do one more thing.
Speaker AIf you know somebody that's struggling during the holidays, reach out to them.
Speaker AYou can set another place at your table.
Speaker AYou can include them.
Speaker AAnd that's how we show Christian love.
Speaker ABecause remember, Joy doesn't need a big budget.
Speaker AIt's not going to cost you all that much more to bring somebody else to your dinner table on Christmas or Thanksgiving.
Speaker AYou just have to have a willing heart for that.
Speaker AAnd that's how we truly live as disciples of Christ.
Speaker ASo I'm going to encourage you right now.
Speaker AGo be a financially confident Christian.
Speaker AI have confidence in you.
Speaker AHave confidence in yourself.
Speaker AYou can do this.
Speaker AYou can get through the holidays with Joy, and you can be impactful to the people that you love.
Speaker ASo stay financially savvy.
Speaker AGod bless you.
Speaker AAnd I'll see you again tomorrow on the show.
