Holidays are a wild ride, huh? We start off all jolly and bright, but then the credit card bill hits us like a ton of bricks come January. In this episode, we're diving deep into the holiday spending chaos and the reality of debt. Our pal Ralph kicks things off with some eye-opening stats—like how 36% of folks end up in debt just from Christmas shopping, and a staggering 96% plan to spend again despite already being in the red. Crazy, right? It’s a vicious cycle of debt that’s hard to escape, but Ralph’s got some solid advice to help us break free from this holiday pressure cooker.
He talks about how the key to enjoying the season without drowning in debt lies in planning and budgeting. Spend smart, set limits, and remember that it’s all about the love you share, not the amount you spend. He shares personal stories of how he and his wife tackled the holiday debt monster and encourages everyone to focus on creating memories instead of just buying gifts. After all, nobody remembers the stuff two years later, but they sure remember the good times spent together.
Ralph wraps it all up with a heartfelt reminder to embrace love over debt and peace over pressure. He gives us a solid action step: write down a commitment to celebrate love this holiday season, not debt. It’s a simple yet powerful mantra to live by as we head into the festivities. So let’s gear up for a debt-free celebration and keep the joy alive!

Hey, I thought I'd start off this new series with a great listener question.
Speaker ARalph, every holiday season, I end up swiping the credit card more than I should.
Speaker AIs it even realistic to think I could actually have a debt free holiday?
Speaker AWhat a great question.
Speaker AYou're probably thinking the exact same thing, Ralph.
Speaker AIt's November.
Speaker ABut guess what?
Speaker AThe holidays are just around the corner.
Speaker AAnd here's some interesting statistics.
Speaker AI want to thank Abby for putting these together.
Speaker AEvery year, Americans spend big during the holidays.
Speaker AIt's not just Americans.
Speaker AAnd Abby and I were talking before the show.
Speaker AShe loves to give.
Speaker AShe loves to make people feel good.
Speaker AAnd that's part of the giving process.
Speaker ASo it's not just in America.
Speaker AIt's all over the world.
Speaker AListen to this.
Speaker ALast year, 36% of us ended up in debt just from Christmas with the average balance of over $1,181.
Speaker AHere's the scary part.
Speaker A42% of those balances carried interest rates of 20% or higher.
Speaker AMan, you're talking about digging yourself a hole.
Speaker AWhich means that January's joy, that that feeling of euphoria coming off of Christmas quickly turns into the month of stress as you try to figure out, how am I going to pay those bills?
Speaker AAnd listen to this one.
Speaker A28%.
Speaker AAlmost a third of shoppers still hadn't paid off last year's holiday bills.
Speaker AAnd even scarier than that, another 27% already expect to go into debt again this year.
Speaker AThat's a cycle, isn't it?
Speaker AAnd half of all US Credit card holders already carry debt.
Speaker AYet listen to this.
Speaker AI was astonished when I read this.
Speaker A96% said they'll still spend on holiday gifts this season.
Speaker AThey're already in debt.
Speaker AListen to this.
Speaker AThe average holiday budget, I didn't have any idea what it was.
Speaker AIt's around $925 per person.
Speaker AI tell you, people in my family, I must be getting off on the cheap because I don't spend anywhere near that.
Speaker AProblem is, most of that goes on credit.
Speaker AWhy does it go on credit?
Speaker ABecause we have ads and sales and social media doesn't help us.
Speaker A40% of shoppers admit they overspend because of pressure from online trends and perfect holiday expectation.
Speaker AI could take a whole dive on that.
Speaker AWe may even do that during this series.
Speaker AThat perfect holiday expectation.
Speaker AAnd here's one.
Speaker AAnd as a parent, you might be a parent too.
Speaker AYou're probably thinking, Ralph, this is right on.
Speaker ANearly one in five parents say they'll cut back on their own essentials just so their Kids don't feel left out during Christmas.
Speaker AWow.
Speaker ATruth is, holidays and money stress often go hand in hand.
Speaker AAds are everywhere, expectations run high and debt feels almost normal.
Speaker ABut is a debt free actually possible?
Speaker AI'm going to answer that question on today's show.
Speaker BThis is Financially Confident Christian, your daily dose of gospel, grounded insight and faith driven tips to help you break the cycle of financial shame with confidence.
Speaker AWelcome to the show.
Speaker AI'm Ralph and I'm excited.
Speaker AToday we're starting a brand new series, Holiday Survival.
Speaker AEnjoying the season without going into debt.
Speaker AListen, for many families, the holiday brings pressure and not peace.
Speaker AThe gifts, the gatherings, the expectations.
Speaker AThen comes January's credit card bill arrival.
Speaker ABut it doesn't have to be that way.
Speaker AI want you to hear me right now.
Speaker AIt doesn't have to be that way.
Speaker AAnd today we're going to start a series where we're going to walk through some simple steps to celebrate with joy and, and spend with wisdom and enter the new year debt free.
Speaker AAre you ready for that?
Speaker AWell, let's do it because listen, I've worked in this area for 30 years.
Speaker AI've helped individuals create holiday budgets and escape that January credit card hangover.
Speaker AYeah, it's truly a hangover, man.
Speaker AYou get a headache when you see that, Bill.
Speaker AAnd I've personally walked through shifting from overspending on holidays.
Speaker AMy kids are older now, but when they were younger, my wife and I used to run ourselves in debt.
Speaker AThis is what we did.
Speaker AYou're probably saying, ralph, we do the same thing, but I'm going to help you build some debt free celebrations rooted in peace.
Speaker AAnd I remember one family I work with, they said to me, ralph, we always get that big January credit card bill.
Speaker AThey said we can't do this anymore.
Speaker AAnd one year I work with them, we decided to set some limits before the season even began.
Speaker AWe did it in November and for the first time, listen to this.
Speaker AThis is beautiful.
Speaker AThey entered New Year with joy instead of financial grit.
Speaker AWell, let's get to a quote from Dave Ramsey.
Speaker AHe said, a budget is telling your money where to go.
Speaker AAnd instead of wondering where it went, well, that's what I want to drill in on today.
Speaker AHere's my key points for today.
Speaker ADebt free does not mean joy free.
Speaker AA lot of people think, well, Ralph, if I'm not going to go into debt, I'm not going to be able to celebrate.
Speaker AEverybody's going to be let down.
Speaker AWe're not going to have any gifts.
Speaker ABut you can still celebrate.
Speaker AYou can still do gifts.
Speaker AYou can still have memorable meals and you can build a great many memories because here's the truth.
Speaker AIt's all about balancing it.
Speaker ATruth is, you're not going to remember what you bought somebody three or four years from now, but you'll remember that meal with them.
Speaker AYou remember that time shared with family.
Speaker ASo let's focus on that.
Speaker ANot spending, not going into debt doesn't mean you relieve the joy.
Speaker AIt's all about planning.
Speaker AThat's what Dave is saying here, budgeting, planning and prioritizing it.
Speaker ABecause listen, as my oldest son says, without a plan, you plan to fail.
Speaker AAnd if you don't have that plan, Abby and I were talking before the show.
Speaker AI said to her, how do you make holidays work?
Speaker ABecause she loves to give.
Speaker AShe says, ralph, I plan early, I save early.
Speaker ASo that when the holidays roll around, the money doesn't just slip away.
Speaker AThat's all part of the thing here.
Speaker AAnd you got to set some limits up front.
Speaker AA lot of people don't do this.
Speaker AI think you make a list, you write down everybody's name and here's what the gifts are, here's what it's going to cost.
Speaker AAnd don't forget things.
Speaker AAnd we'll talk about this in the series.
Speaker ADon't forget about things like travel budgets and food costs.
Speaker AA lot of people don't think about that.
Speaker AThen they have a big house full of people over and there went to grocery budget for the month before you even step into the store.
Speaker AUnderstand those limits, understand what you're going to do.
Speaker AAnd at the end, it's all about peace over pressure.
Speaker AThe holidays can bring great joy, but they don't have to bring this burden of bills waiting in January.
Speaker AI see so many people that lose out on the joy of the holidays because there's so much pressure.
Speaker AAnd listen, I felt this myself.
Speaker AI remember when my kids were real young, we were really struggling financially.
Speaker AIt was just the two of us.
Speaker AWe did two young boys and man.
Speaker AWe wanted our kids to have this amazing Christmas and we put ourselves into debt.
Speaker AIt took nearly a year to pay that off.
Speaker AThat was a burden.
Speaker AWe don't need to live in that burden.
Speaker AAnd that leads us to our Bible verse.
Speaker AToday, my favorite book of the Bible, as you know, if you've listened, is the book of Romans.
Speaker AAnd this one comes to us from Romans 13, 8.
Speaker AAnd it says this.
Speaker ALet no debt remain outstanding except the continually debt to love one another for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
Speaker AAnd think about that for a second.
Speaker AHow does that relate to what we're Talking about debt.
Speaker ASo many people drive themselves into financial ruin because.
Speaker ABecause they're thinking, oh, I gotta have this perfect Christmas.
Speaker AI gotta buy for this one.
Speaker AI gotta buy for that one.
Speaker ABut what's the scripture telling us?
Speaker AIt's all about love.
Speaker ADon't let a debt remain outstanding except to continue to love one another.
Speaker ADuring this holiday season, I want to encourage you, think about how you can love one another, how you can do for other people without running yourself into debt.
Speaker ABecause, listen, that's going to steal all the joy.
Speaker AYou don't need that stress in January, February.
Speaker AListen, what did the stats tell us?
Speaker APeople are still paying on credit card debt from a year ago.
Speaker ALet me tell you a secret.
Speaker AThey're paying on debts from years ago.
Speaker AIt's just snowballed and grown and grown and grown.
Speaker AYou don't have to live like that anymore.
Speaker AHow about we pray together?
Speaker AFather, we come to you right now as we prepare for the holiday season.
Speaker AThe greatest gift of all was when you sent your son, Jesus Christ to us, Lord, and we're going to celebrate that.
Speaker ABut Lord, help us to have wisdom to avoid the debt traps this season.
Speaker AHelp us to shelter ourselves and seal us away from the ads that are trying to drag us into this spiral of debt.
Speaker AAnd help us to remember that love matters more than gifts.
Speaker AAs your scripture says, the debt of love is more important.
Speaker ASo, Lord, we just ask that you would give us peace and freedom and help us to break free of the pressure of the holidays and really focus on love and love.
Speaker AFor our love for Christ in this season, we ask this in confidence in the name of Jesus.
Speaker AAmen.
Speaker AAll right, you ready for your one action step today?
Speaker AI want you to write down one clear commitment for this season.
Speaker AHere, I've already got it figured out for you.
Speaker AGet a pen and paper or write this on your phone.
Speaker AWherever you're going to see it, write this and say, this holiday, I will celebrate love, not debt.
Speaker AI'm going to say that one more time because it's so important that we embrace this.
Speaker AThis holiday.
Speaker AThis holiday right now that's starting right now.
Speaker AI'm going to celebrate love, not debt.
Speaker AAnd I'm going to encourage you, put it somewhere visible, wherever that's good for you.
Speaker AMaybe it's on your fridge.
Speaker AMaybe it's on a mirror, your desk or unlock on your phone screen.
Speaker AAbby and I were laughing before.
Speaker AWe say maybe you make a tattoo of it and put a tattoo on your arm.
Speaker AThis holiday, I will celebrate love, not debt.
Speaker ABecause, listen, this can be your daily reminder that gifts fade.
Speaker AListen, gifts are going to fade.
Speaker AI think about it right now.
Speaker AWhen I look back as a kid, I don't remember any of the gifts that my family gave me.
Speaker ABut man, I tell you what, my mother probably went into debt to do it.
Speaker ABut what I do remember was her love.
Speaker AThat's what's important.
Speaker ASee, peace is worth more than presence.
Speaker AAnd a simple decision now prevents stress later.
Speaker ASo let this one sentence be your anchor.
Speaker AWhen tempted to overspend, go back to that.
Speaker AI'm not going to allow this.
Speaker ALet it be your guide to bring back joy, wisdom and freedom in this holiday season.
Speaker ABecause, friend, the holidays don't have to leave you with regret.
Speaker AChoose love over debt, peace over pressure, and wisdom over worry.
Speaker AListen, today I want to encourage you.
Speaker AGo out there and be a financially confident Christian.
Speaker AI have confidence in you.
Speaker AYou can do this.
Speaker AYou really can break free of this and have a joyful holiday season.
Speaker AStay financially savvy.
Speaker AGo.
Speaker AGod bless you.
Speaker AAnd you have a great day today.
