It’s like one day you’re living life, and the next you’re looking at your balance, scratching your head, wondering where it all went. It’s not always about splurges on big stuff; sometimes, it’s the small, sneaky expenses that add up — those random subscriptions we forgot we even signed up for or those takeout meals we thought were just a treat. Today, we dive deep into a listener's struggle with this very issue, exploring how to regain control without feeling like you're obsessively counting every penny. Spoiler alert: it’s about finding that sweet spot of awareness without drowning in details.

Our listener called in, feeling lost in the financial fog and just wanting clarity without the stress of tracking every little expense. And that’s the crux of the matter! And let’s not forget, the big takeaway here is that awareness leads to adjustment, and adjustments lead to peace. No more surprise numbers staring back at you! It’s about embracing the journey of financial management, not letting it become a source of anxiety. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a fresh perspective on managing your money — one that encourages you to take a peek at your transactions without the shame. Have you ever looked at your bank account and thought to yourself, where did it all go? I'll tell you what, I've certainly found out many times. No big purchases, no major decisions. Just gone. And now you're left feeling a little confused, maybe even a little unsettled. And we got a great listener call today speaking to this very issue. So if your money feels like it's slipping through your fingers, today we're going to bring clarity without adding stre. Hey, friend. Ralph Estep Jr. Here. Welcome to Financially Confident Christian. If this is the first time you've joined us, thank you so much for taking a little time and joining me. This show is all about breaking that cycle of financial shame and. And helping you find confidence. And I know personally there are so many people out there right now who feel like they're out of sync with their money. And today's topic is all about that. We're going to talk about why your money keeps disappearing, but even bigger than that, how to take control of that without obsessing. Well, let's get right to today's listener question. Like I said, this is a voicemail we got the other day.

Speaker B

Hey, Ralph, I've been listening to Financially Confident Christian for a while now, and I'm dealing with something that I think you should hear about. I look at my bank account, and I don't even know where it went.Like I was just living my life, and now the number's lower, and I can't point to why that bothers me. Not the money, really. More the feeling that I'm not even paying attention to my own life. I don't want to track every coffee. I'm not trying to obsess. But I also don't want to keep waking up surprised. Is there a way to stay aware without it turning into this whole thing, Something I can actually stick with without dreading it every time?Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks for all you do.

Speaker A

Well, I just want to thank you so much for the call, actually. And I felt this way myself so many times. But the real issue here is not about money. It's about this feeling of disconnect with your money. That's what you're saying. You're saying, look, I don't want to track every single coffee. I want to build some elaborate system. But the fact that you are doing this means that you're not careless about your money. It's not a lack of discipline. In my personal opinion. The issue here is really a lack of visibility, a lack of clarity, and that Feeling of being out of sync with your money is frustrating. I totally get it. You're earning money, you're working hard, you're trying to be responsible, but somehow you're not fully seeing what's happening. And again, that doesn't mean you're careless. It just means you need a simple visibility rhythm. So let's start by talking about how money really disappears. As I alluded to at the beginning, money usually doesn't disappear in these big dramatic moments. Now sure, that happens sometimes you go buy something big, you go buy something, it hits your bank account. What normally happens for most of us humans out here living in normal lives is it happens through those small repeated decisions. Things like subscriptions. How many subscriptions do we have that we don't even use? That convenience?Spending unplanned meals, you know you're out bouting around town, let me just grab something quick to eat. You don't realize how much you spend on that a couple times a week. Those small add ons and those automatic drafts, they all blend together and they make things complicated. Now it would be easy to say, well, shame on you for spending that. But this show is not about shame. This show is about awareness. And like I said earlier, most of the time the problem isn't discipline, it's awareness. So let's get right to today's central question. How do you stay aware of your money without becoming overwhelmed by it?Now I want to introduce something that I've been working on for a while. It's what I call the faithful framework. And we're going to spell out the word faithful because that's the whole point of this. Each of those letters is going to go to a particular area that I'm going to talk about. So we're going to jump right into us. So let's start off with F beginning face reality. You got to start seeing what's actually happening.Don't start with a pinch of shame. Don't say, well, I don't understand it, Ralph. I'm never good with money. I can't figure out where my money's going to. Don't start there.Start with analyzing the situation and seeing what's really happening. And don't try to fix everything. Just start by looking and saying what you're going to, what is going on.Because until you see where your money's going, it's always going to feel like it's disappearing. So you got to start by getting to a point where you're seeing it clearly. But let's move on to A and A is aim. Clearly this is your vision. You've got to decide where you actually want your money system to go. The goal here is not perfection. When you made your call, when you put your voicemail to us, you were very clear about that. You don't want to sit there and control every penny, but you feel like it's getting out of control. So what I would suggest is maybe you have a goal of peace, maybe you have a goal of clarity, confidence in your decisions.Or maybe for you, you keep on getting hit with those overdrafts. So for you, it's the goal of fewer surprises. And that system should support your life, not stress you out, which is what I heard you say.I don't want to track every single coffee. So you gotta build a system that supports your life and not stresses you out. Your financial rhythm should help you feel connected, not condemned. But let's move on to I. One of the things I think is so important is you got to identify the timing of this. Build that rhythm. You've got to build a rhythm that you're going to maintain. Don't try to fix everything today. If you say, well, Ralph, I looked at my money and it's going here and here and here. And you're never going to fix all those things, but you can be consistent and look at individual pieces, that consistency is going to matter more over time than intensity. Here's a great idea. Maybe a small daily check in is going to be better for you than some complicated system that you're going to abandon.Like you said, you don't want to track every coffee. I appreciate that. I would, I would argue and say you probably should. But don't build a system you already know you're not going to use.Let's move on to T. And this is what I call the think of options area. This is the idea of brainstorming. Here's some ideas that I have based on your very question. One of the things you could consider doing is check your bank account once a day. Just look at what came in, what went out, review your transactions every night, maybe write down all your expenses for one day.Just strap them all down on a piece of note, you know, or maybe use a simple app. There are some great apps out there that will help you do this. A small note on your phone. The key is don't over complicate it.You gotta pick one method. So many people think they're gonna pick 15 methods from this. Not, not, not just pick one.You don't need perfect categories, you just need One method that you're actually gonna use. Now another thing you've got to do is you've gotta move to H and that's have a plan. You gotta turn that awareness that we talked about. We talked all about awareness so far, but now you've gotta actually pivot into a plan. Now here's the thing I'd recommend for you maybe spend two minutes a day looking at your money and just ask three simple questions. What came in, what went out, and what's left. Because those two minutes of awareness can prevent weeks of confusion down the road. But let's move into the second F. And that's faith and surrender. That's where I really want to lean into our faith and grace. You've got to connect that money habit to peace and not fear. The truth is, so many people avoid money because they look at it feeling like judgment.A lot of people don't budget because like, oh, that's just. You're telling me restrictions. You're telling me I can't do things. But God never calls us to manage money through fear. We've really got to approach our finances with clarity and peace. You build that rhythm. Maybe you say something like this, lord, I just want you to help me approach my finances with clarity, not fear.Being aware is not punishment, it's actually stewardship which leads me to you. And that you've got to understand the progress. Progress for you. Looks like, hey, maybe I'm checking my account every day. I'm noticing these patterns.I'm eating out too much. I'm spending too much money on subscriptions. Maybe you pause before you do any spending. I've talked about that on the show many times.Maybe you saw something you usually miss or you stayed aware of what's going on for just one more day. It's not about perfection. Progress is not perfection. Progress is staying connected. And then we end it with L. And that's a look ahead. You got to look and see what this rhythm is going to create over time. Once you start to build this rhythm, this daily check in or this weekly check in, this awareness, it's going to reveal patterns. And once you see those patterns, you're going to be able to make better choices. And once you make better choices, that's going to lead to more confidence. And when you feel confident, it's going to lower your stress level. And that's how control grows without obsession. That awareness that we talked about today, and that's really the big idea for today, is awareness. That awareness leads to adjustment and adjustment leads to Peace. That clarity creates calm. And that simple awareness changes everything. So here's your win for today. That's what I really want to encourage you to do.Open your bank account and review your last five transactions. That's all. We don't need to reinvent the wheel today. We don't need to go and fix everything. Don't try to go categorize the whole month.Don't build some elaborate spreadsheet. And most of all, don't judge yourself. Just look. That awareness begins with just one look. Now let's get into our Bible verse for today. If you're new to the show, I always like to put us back into scripture to give us some foundation. And Today's comes from First Corinthians, chapter 14, verse 33.For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. And if you think about why this fits today, when your finances move from that state of confusion to clarity, they begin to reflect the peace that God desires for your life. And listen, friend, God wants you to have peace in your finances, in your life. How about we pray together?Heavenly Father, I lift up the person listening right now who feels confused and they feel disconnected from their finances. And Lord, you see their desire for clarity. You see their desire for peace. So I just ask right now that you would bring understanding where there has been confusion, Lord. Bring calm where there has been anxiety. Help them take just a few simple steps to build that awareness and move forward with confidence.Remind them, Lord, they're not behind, but they're actually learning. And guide them into a place of peace and control. And we ask this in Jesus name. Amen, friend, that clarity can bring you peace in your life. And it starts with one simple look. So today I want to encourage you again, open your bank account and just review your last five transactions.I'm telling you that one small step can help you stop feeling surprised and really start feeling connected to your money again.
