As we go deeper, I unpack what worship really means and why it extends far beyond church attendance, music, or outward expressions of faith. Drawing from Romans 11:36, I explore the truth that everything is from God, through God, and for God. I also challenge some of the subtle ways good things can become idols when they begin to occupy a place in our hearts that belongs to Him alone. Through biblical insight and honest reflection, I encourage you to examine what is truly ruling your life and rediscover the freedom that comes when God is restored to His rightful place at the center of your worship.

Takeaways:

  • Everyone worships something, whether they recognize it or not.
  • Worship is not limited to religious activities—it includes whatever we trust, value, and pursue most.
  • What sits on the throne of your heart will ultimately shape your priorities, decisions, and direction in life.
  • Idols are often subtle and can be good things that gradually take the place God alone should occupy.
  • True worship is revealed by what you treasure, depend on, and build your life around.
  • Success, comfort, approval, security, and self-image can become idols when they matter more than God.
  • Spiritual freedom begins when we honestly identify the things competing for our devotion.
  • Realigning our hearts means surrendering those competing loyalties and placing God back at the center of our lives.

Everybody worships something. Not just religious people, not just church people, not just those people who sing on Sunday. Everybody worships something. The real question is not whether you worship. The real question is this. What's sitting on the throne of your heart? What gets your deepest trust? What gets your strongest affection? What gets your first obedience? What gets your fear? What gets your focus? And what gets your life? Because whatever rules your heart is going to eventually shape your life. And if we're honest, a lot of people will tell you they worship God while our lives are really orbiting around comfort, around approval, around control, success, their image, and yes, their self. Now, if you look in the book of Romans, chapter 11, verse 36, it gives us a line that pulls us back to reality. It says, from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. And that verse doesn't just sound beautiful, it confronts us, it centers us. And yes, it exposes us.Because if all things are from him and through him and to him, then anything in his place has become an idol. Welcome to Truth Unveiled with Ralph. This is the show where we pull back the curtain on culture, on faith, and the deeper reality shaping the world around us through the lens of biblical truth. I'm Ralph Estep Jr. And today I want to walk you through a question that is simple, but it's not easy. And that's what are you worshiping? Now, this isn't just a message about church songs. It isn't a message about outward religion. It's not a message for people who think idolatry is something ancient or distant and obvious. No, this is a message about the heart. This is a message about those hidden loyalties. This is a message about what has first place in us, even when we don't say it out loud. And my prayer is that this episode won't just inform you. I deeply hope it will search you and strengthen you and bring you back to a deeper place of surrender. Now, if you look around, we live in a culture that hasn't stopped worshiping. Problem is, it's just simply change the names of the altars. People still bow. They just bow to different things. Now, some of us bow to success. Some of us bow to self. Some of us bow to approval. Some of us bow to sex or politics or comfort or safety. Some even bow to ministry without even realizing it.And here's what makes this dangerous. A lot of idols don't look obviously evil at first. For so many of us, they often look useful, even reasonable, even admirable. And that's what makes them subtle? An idol isn't just something bad. An idol is anything we make ultimate that should remain secondary. And if we don't let God examine our hearts, we can be very sincere, we can be very active. Hey, we can even be very moral and still be living around the false center. That's where the tension starts.Because you can say the right things with your mouth and still give your heart to something else. But let's get into the Bible. Let's anchor this In Romans, chapter 11, verse 36 is what I started with today. For from him and through him, and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. Now this verse gives us three realities that reorder the whole conversation. The first one is this, all things are from Him. When we think about that, God is the source. The second thing we see is all things are through him. That's God playing the role as sustainer. And third thing, all things are to Him. That's showing us God is the goal. And it tells us that life isn't self generated, it's not self sustained, and it's also not self directed. It begins with God. It's held together by God, and in the end, it's meant for the glory of God. And that's why worship matters so deeply.Because worship isn't mainly about a song. It's about alignment. It's about whether your heart is rightly ordered under the lordship of God or whether something else has quietly taken his place. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37 that we are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart and all of our soul and all of our mind. Not part of it.Not the leftover pieces, not the table scraps, not whatever remains after we serve those idols we put in our life. All of it. Well now let me move into my first part of my message here today. I've said it a couple times already.A lot of people hear the word music and they think, well, that's at worship. Worship is bigger than music. When so many people hear the word worship, they immediately think of singing. And yes, singing can be part of worship, but worship is so much deeper than music. Worship is what you treasure. Worship is what you trust. Worship is what you build around. Worship is what you serve. And worship is what you can't imagine living without. Jesus said it in Matthew 6:21, where your treasure is there your heart will be also. That means worship reveals itself in what captures your heart. If your peace rises and falls with money, money may be too high in your heart. If Your identity rises and falls at people's approval, then approval may be too high in your heart. If your emotional world is controlled by whether life stays comfortable, then comfort may be too high in your heart. If your whole world revolves around protecting your image, then self may be too high in your heart. And that's why we got to stop right now. We've got to ask a really hard, hard question. Not just do I believe in God. I think there's a lot of people that says, oh yeah, I believe in God, Ralph. But ask this difficult, more difficult question. What is functionally ruling me? Because worship isn't only what you declare, it's what your life demonstrates. Now let's move on from that first thought. Let's move into from Him. And that's God is the source. Romans 11:36 begins with this phrase. It begins with from him.And that means God is the Source of all things. Your life is from Him. The breath you take is from Him. Those gifts that he's given you, they're from Him. Your mind is from Him.The strength that you have in your muscles is from Him. The opportunities that you get are from Him. And yes, your salvation is from Him.And this confronts one of the deepest lies in the human heart, the lie of self sufficiency. We live in a world that celebrates self creation. Look around.People want to define themselves, they want to exalt themselves, they want to build themselves. And they act as if they're accountable to nobody else. But scripture cuts through that illusion. You aren't your own source. You didn't create your own life. You didn't design your own breath. You didn't sustain your own existence. Our pride says something that's just not true. Our pride says, look what I built. But humility says, lord, without you I have nothing. And when we forget that everything is from him, we start living as though we are the center.Well, friends, that's not worship. That's just rebellion in polished language. But now let's talk about through Him. That's God is the sustainer.Romans 11:36 doesn't stop with God as source. It says all things are through Him. And that means God isn't just the One who starts life, he's the One who sustains it.The book of Colossians, chapter one reminds us that in Christ all things hold together. That means you don't just need God at the beginning, you need him every day, you need him every hour. You need him every step of your life. You need his strength to endure. You need his wisdom to discern you need his mercy to stand and you need his grace to obey. And this is where self reliance gets exposed.See, a lot of people say they trust God, but they functionally depend on themselves. They're trusting their own strategy, their own effort, their own planning, their own talent, their own resources, and yes, their own control. But whatever you depend on the most often reveals what you worship most deeply. And sometimes anxiety reveals misplaced worship because anxiety often exposes what we think we must hold together on our own.Sometimes striving reveals misplaced worship because striving can reveal what we believe. Everything rises or falls on our own effort. And sometimes exhaustion reveals misplaced worship because we're trying to carry what only God was meant to sustain. We are called to work hard, yes, absolutely, but not as our own saviors. We plan, but we don't worship the plan.We move, but we don't trust our movement more than God's hand. And we labor, but our confidence is still in Him. Which leads me to this. To Him, God is the goal. And this is where the verse becomes even more piercing. If you think about it, all things are to him, not to us, not to our ego or image, not to our comfort or platform to Him.And that means your life isn't ultimately about self expression, it is about God's glory. Your gifts aren't finally about your name, they're about his glory. That calling you have isn't finally about your recognition, it's about his glory.Your story isn't finally about your kingdom, it's about his glory. And this is the very place where many people resist God. They don't mind being helpful, they just don't want him to be central. They want him as the provider, but not as Lord. And sure, they want him as support, but not as the One who defines purpose. But Biblical Christianity doesn't allow us to make God an assistant to our ambitions. And I want to say that and make it more clear.Biblical Christianity, true biblical Christianity doesn't allow us to make God our assistant to our ambitions. He is Lord, he is King. He is the One for Whom all things exist. And if something else has become the goal of your life, then that thing has become too large in your heart. Now I want to pause here for a second. I've talked about a listener spotlight. This section is for the person listening right now who feels convicted but also a little unsettled. And that might be you. Might be you right now maybe realizing that your life has drifted. Now, I'm not talking about into open rebellion, but in this subtle Misalignment. I want to speak to you right now because maybe you still love God, but your peace has been tied to money. And maybe you still believe truth, but if you're being honest, you're still living for approval. And maybe you're serving faithfully, but underneath of it all, you're exhausted because you've been trying to prove something.Maybe what you call diligence has really been control. Maybe what you call wisdom has really been fear. And maybe what you call ambition has really been worship of success. And if that's you right at this moment, I want you to hear me clearly. The conviction of the Holy Spirit isn't meant to drive you away from God. It's meant to bring you back. And right now, if the Lord is putting his finger on something, friend, that's mercy. That's not rejection. That's mercy. He's not exposing your heart to shame you. He's exposing your heart to heal you.But now I want to do some fact checks. You know, this show is all about comparing culture with biblical truth, because there are several half truths in the culture that keep people blind in this area. Here's the first myth. Idolatry is only about statues and false religions. That's just not true. The book of Ezekiel speaks about idols in the heart. That idol doesn't have to be this statue you see on the street. An idol can be invisible. It can be internal and still be spiritually powerful. Here's another myth we have to break right now.If something is good, it can't be an idol. Again, that's false. Some of the strongest idols are good things made ultimate. Good things, like your family. But you put it above everything else.Good things like your work, but it's taken over your whole life. Good things like ministry, but you've made it an idol or security or even reputation, those good things. And listen, there is nothing wrong with family or work or ministry or security or even reputation. But good things become dangerous when they take God's place. Here's the third myth. If I feel strongly about something, that means it must be right. How many times have you heard this in common culture today? Well, I feel really strongly about it. But friend, that's false. Just because you feel strong about doesn't mean it's truth.Sincerity doesn't sanctify deception. We got to measure our hearts against scripture. That's the key thing. Just because you feel it doesn't mean it's scripturally true. Here's myth four.As long as I still mention God, I can't be worshiping something else. Again, that's false. You can speak religious language and still live around another center. Israel did this. There are people right now that are still doing it. The outward language is not the same as that inward surrender. You can talk the talk, but you got to walk the walk. It's got to be what's in your heart. And here's the final myth I want to talk about. And I hear this one all the time. The myth is this.God only cares about obvious sin, not those hidden attachments. Ralph, again, that's false. God looks at the heart. What did he say? We talked about this a couple weeks ago. The heart, above all things, is deceitful.God's not only concerned with what you avoid, he's concerned with what you adore, friend. He wants you to adore him. But let's move on. Modern idols in our culture today are often respectable. This is one of the hardest truths to face.Modern idols don't always look dark. Sometimes, truth be told, they look respectable. Things like success. Success can become an idol. And it's not because work is bad, but because achievement can become your identity. Approval can become an idol. And it's not because relationships are bad, but because being liked.I just want to be light can become more important than being faithful. Comfort can become an idol as well. Not because rest is bad, but because convenience can become our highest value. Look around.Politics can become an idol. Not because public truth doesn't matter. Of course it does. But because believers can begin to place more hope in earthly power than in the kingdom of God. And yes, even ministry can become an idol again. Not because serving God is bad, but because the work of God can quietly replace intimacy with God.You're doing everything for God, but man, the intimacy is gone. That's why this requires spiritual discernment. That idol, the things I just mentioned, they look good from the outside. They don't have to look evil. But when it's become the ultimate, that's when it becomes a problem. Now, we've talked a lot about what worship looks like, but let's talk about what true worship looks like. How do we realign with this?It starts with a simple thing, and that's repentance. I'm not talking about some shallow guilt, not some temporary emotion that you're feeling in the moment. I'm talking about deep seated repentance.Naming that idol that you put in front of everything, whether it be family or ministry or image, turning from it, surrendering it, and bringing your heart back under the lordship of Christ. If we look to Romans 12, it says to present your bodies as a living sacrifice. That is worship. True worship says, lord, you are my source.True worship says, lord, you are my strength. True worship says, lord, my life is for your glory. Now don't get confused by this. True worship doesn't mean perfection.A lot of people think, well, I can't be worshiping if I'm not finding perfection. You're never going to find perfection, but it does mean surrender. It means holding every good gift with open hands. It means refusing to let anything outrank God in your heart. It means saying yes to truth even when it confronts you. It means letting God reorder your loves. And when he is in his rightful place, that's where you actually find freedom. You can enjoy blessings without worshiping them. You can work without being enslaved by success. You can care about people without being ruled by approval. You can engage culture without being consumed by it. And you can walk in peace because your heart has a center. That's true. But now I want to slow this down a little bit. What if the greatest spiritual issue in your life right now isn't the obvious sin you've been watching for, but that subtle idol you've been protecting? What if the thing draining your peace isn't just stress, but disordered worship? What if the very reason you feel unstable isn't because God has left you, but because your heart has wrapped itself around something that can't hold you? I just want you to pause right now, wherever you are, and take a moment and ask yourself these questions.Because these will reveal where your heart is. What do I fear losing the most? What is that thing that keeps you up at night because you're so afraid you're gonna lose it?What do I think about the most? What is consuming your thoughts? Is it your family? Is it your work? Is it your self identity? Here's a great question. What gets my first emotional reaction Most of the time, what we react to emotionally first is what we've made our idol. Ask yourself this question. What do I protect the fastest? My personal belief. We protect those idols Quickly. Ask yourself this question. What do I obey most quickly? And finally, this. What is that thing I'm unwilling to surrender if God put his finger on it? Because maybe God's putting his finger on it right now.And none of these things are easy questions. But friend, they are necessary questions. Because healing begins when honesty begins. And now I'm going to get to our truth.Unveil moment for this episode. A lot of what people call freedom today is Actually worship of self, a lot of what people call living their truth is really refusing God's truth. That's not liberation, that's deception. You were never designed to be your own God. And every single time human beings put themselves on the throne, what happens?Confusion multiplies, peace fades and truth gets rewritten to protect the idol. Let's call it plainly. When the self becomes sacred, truth becomes negotiable, obedience becomes offensive, the word correction becomes hateful. And God, and I hate to even say this, God becomes optional. But friend, truth doesn't bend to keep our idols comfortable.God isn't going to share his throne and he shouldn't share his throne because only he is worthy, only he is holy and only he can sustain what your heart is asking for. Now, maybe you're listening right now and you've never truly surrendered your life to Jesus Christ. And that's friend, where everything begins, the deepest idol in the human heart is self rule. It's that belief that if I belong to me, that I decide what is true, that I can live apart from God and still be whole. But that's not what Bible tells us. The Bible tells us that sin separates us from God and no idol is going to save us.And I say this out of love, friend, money is never going to save you. I don't care how much money you have in your bank account, how much money you have in a retirement account, money is never going to save you.Success isn't going to save you either. You can have the highest level of success. That'll never save you. Approval. Guess what? That's not going to save you either. And I'm going to say something that's going to squash a few toes. Religion can't save you either. Anything you do yourself, anything that you do with your own effort can't save you. There's only one person that can save you and that's Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a righteous life that we couldn't live. We can't do it. He died for our sins and he rose again. And he calls us to do something so simple he calls us to repent and just believe the gospel. So if you're ready to turn from sin, if you're ready to turn from that self rule that you've been living in for so long. And if you're ready to place your trust in Christ, you can call him on him right now. And if you're ready to do that, why don't you pray with me right now? Just simple prayer. Jesus, I know I've sinned And I know I can't save myself. And right at this moment, I turn from that sin and I place my trust in you, Lord. Please forgive me, Lord. Please cleanse me, Lord. Make me new. Be Lord of my life. Teach me to follow you. Amen.Friend, if that's the cry of your heart, don't stop there. I want to encourage you right now.Open the word of God, get grounded in scripture and find a faithful Bible believing church and begin walking with Jesus in truth. I want to come back again to Romans 11:36. You've heard it several times now, but I really want you to go away from this. For from him and through him.And to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen, friend. That verse gives us the whole map again. God is the source, God is the sustainer, and God is the goal. And if that's true, and I hope you believe that the scriptures are true, then worship isn't a side issue, it's the central issue. Because when worship is disordered, your life becomes disordered. But when God is restored to his rightful place, clarity begins, peace deepens and strength rises and your heart begins to come alive again. Now, I want to give you a strong word to carry with you this week. It comes from Joshua, chapter 24, verse 15.It says, choose this day whom you will serve. Choose this day whom you will serve. And that's still the question. That's the question that we've got to ask ourselves every single day, in every season, in every decision, who will you serve? So this week I want to challenge you to do three things.First thing I want you to do is I want you to ask God to reveal any idol that has taken too much space in your heart. Be honest with yourself. Don't defend it, don't rename it, bring it into the light. Just say, lord, what is the idol that's taken your place?Second thing I want you to do is I want you to write down one thing that most competes with God in your trust and your time or your emotional dependence. Name it clearly. What is that thing that competes with God for your trust, for your time or your emotional dependence?Third thing I want you to do is practice surrender in one concrete way. This week, maybe you battle with the idol of approval. I'm just going to encourage you to obey God in an area where people may not clap.If your idol is comfort, do the thing obedience requires even when it stretches you. If your idol's control, pray before acting and release the outcome to God.And if your idol success, I want to challenge you this week, choose faithfulness over image. Let's all decide that this week can be a week of honest worship. How about we pray together?Father God, thank you for being patient with us even when our hearts drift away from you. Thank you for loving us enough to confront us, Lord. Thank you for loving us enough to call us back, Lord. And right now I ask you to search us.Reveal those things that have become too important to our hearts, Lord. Reveal what we've trusted more than you. Reveal those things that we feared more than you. And, Lord, reveal those things that we served more than you.Tear down every false altar in us, Lord. Reorder our loves, cleanse our hearts and teach us to worship you re rightly. And for that one who feels convicted, Lord, I just ask that you would bring mercy to them. For the one who feels confused, Lord, bring clarity to them. For that one who feels trapped, Lord, bring freedom. And for that one who needs courage, Lord, bring strength. And may our lives reflect this reality that all things are from you and through you and to you. To you be glory forever. And we ask this in Jesus name, Amen. Friend, if this episode spoke to you, I want to encourage you to do something.I want you to share it with somebody who needs this question in front of them. That question again is what are you worshiping? Not do what I say, not what do you post, not what do you sing, what actually rules your heart. And I just want to encourage all of us to take time this week to sit before the Lord, open his word and let him search us. And remember, this conviction isn't cruelty, it's mercy. When it leads you back to truth. You don't have to live ruled by lesser things. You were made for more. You were made for God. So until next time, I just want to encourage you right now to stay anchored, stay discerning and stay faithful. This is Truth Unveiled with Ralph. God bless you and I'll see you next time.
